That staircase was the 9th Earl of Shaftesbury’s gift to his mother. He was also the one that in the year 1934 presented the castle to the City of Belfast. In 1978, Belfast City Council started a major refurbishment that lasted for over ten years, the building officially being re-opened to the public on the 11th of November 1988.

The castle has an antiques shop, visitors centre and also a restaurant being not only a popular venue for conferences but also for private dining and wedding receptions. For a long, long time the castle was a very popular venue for wedding receptions, afternoon teas and also dances.

Belfast Castle is a part of Cave Hill, that was always considered of being synonymous with Belfast. Cave Hill is names so after the five caves that are located on the side of the cliffs that contain plenty of historical, archaeological and natural features. One of them is Cave Hill Visitor Centre that is located in the basement of Belfast Castle, that is opened from Monday to Sunday, for several hours in a day, free of charge.
